Coaching is a collaborative relationship that is different from what one would have with a therapist or mentor. This unique relationship is guided by several principles:
- The client is whole and resourceful. This means the client doesn’t need to be “fixed”, for they aren’t broken. They already have all the internal resources to achieve their dreams. The coach’s role is to help reveal these inner resources to the client and help them achieve even greater levels of wholeness.
- The coach and client meet on equal ground. The coach is not the expert, in fact, just the opposite. The client is the foremost expert on themselves. The coach helps the client to gain clarity by asking powerful questions and suggesting strategies to connect with the Self.
- Lasting change can only happen in the present. In coaching the past is not forgotten, nor is the future ignored. However, coaches place the most focus on the present knowing that we cannot change the past, though we can change our relationship to it, and we cannot predict the future though we can plan for it.
- Life was meant to have meaning, purpose, and joy. Whereas the focus of therapy is generally to make sure the client is functional, coaching sets the bar much higher. The coach believes the client is capable of a meaningful, purposeful, and joyful life and helps the client to envision and achieve it.
